Serian Camp

Serian Camp

One of the best places to see the wildebeest migration on an East African tour is at Serain, a traditional bush camp in the Mara North Conservancy of the Masai Mara.
Place to stay: In seven large, fancy safari tents with private bathrooms

Things to do: fishing, game drives, and guided walks

The best part was seeing the Great Migration with a Masai Warrior on a walking tour.

Place: Masai Mara, Kenya’s Mara North Conservancy

The Serain Camp is a native bush camp in the Mara North Conservancy. It is on the banks of the Mara River. The Mara is where the Great Migration of the Wildebeest ends every year, and it’s a great place to see wildlife. With its large huts set up on wide wooden decks, this traditional Kenyan safari camp has a lovely colonial feel to it.

Guests at Serain can go on game drives through the savannah fields of the Mara with experienced Maasai guides and trackers, or they can walk through Africa like our ancestors did. This type of walking safari is a great way to learn about the bush’s ecosystems and see some of the smaller animals that live there on your East African trip.

Hot air balloon safaris can also be done from Serain. Get to the balloon before dawn and take off as the sun rises over the horizon. Floating above the fields, taking in the endless views, and looking for animals spread out across them is the most peaceful way to see wildlife.

Place to stay

At this traditional Kenyan safari camp, you can stay in large tented rooms that are tastefully decorated and have great views of the Masai Mara.
This is a classic bush camp that looks and feels like it was built in the 1700s. Seven tents that look like marquees and have open sides are available for safari stays. They are tastefully decorated and have large double beds and a writing desk put in a smart spot. Each bathroom has a shower, a deep tub, and two sinks. The bathrooms have a rural feel to them.

The place

Serain Camp is on a private reserve in the Masai Mara, which makes it a great place to watch the Great Wildebeest Migration.
The Serain Camp is on the Mara River, in the middle of the privately owned Mara North Conservancy and next to the Masai Mara National Reserve. This part of the Mara doesn’t get as many visitors as other parts, but it has one of the densest groups of Big Cats in East Africa.

How to Get to Serain Camp

Kenya’s city, Nairobi, is a 40-minute flight from the Musiara Airstrip to Serain Camp. Wilson Airport has both regularly scheduled planes and privately chartered flights. You will be met at the airstrip by a Serain guide who will drive you through the Mara to the camp. The trip takes about 45 minutes. It takes 45 minutes to drive from the airport to the camp.

Things to do

You can go on interesting walking safaris at Serain Camp during your East African safari vacation. They also offer game drives and Hot Air Balloon Safaris.

Safaris on foot

You will be able to tell the difference between being in a car and going through the bush on a walking safari. Try to pick up signs of wildlife as your senses get stronger. The Masai guides will teach you how to track animals and understand how they act. They will also help you find the different kinds of birds that live in the area.

Fun game drives

Since Serain is in a private reserve, off-road driving is allowed. This means that the guides can take you closer to the animals so you can get better views of them. You can also go on exciting night game drives, where you can see animals that come out at night, like leopards and lions, getting ready for the hunt.

Safari in a hot air balloon

Early in the morning, before dawn, the hot air balloon tour leaves from Serain Camp. Watch as the balloon gets bigger before dawn. Then you can get on a board and cast off. Drift above the Acacia trees as the sun slowly fills the sky with light. On the savannahs, you can see animals like Wildebeest, Elephants, and Zebras in groups. You can get to Hippo by following the Mara River down below. The balloon will land after about an hour, and you will have a champagne breakfast in the bush.
