The montane rainforest is about 220,000 acres big, and the plants and animals that live there have their own special temperature. Two higher peaks can be found further south. The highest point in the middle of the range is 2,375 meters (1.47 miles) above sea level. People from the semi-nomadic Samburu tribes live in the dry plains nearby.
The way to get to Kitich Forest Camp in the Mathews Mountains
There isn’t much to do near Kitich Forest Camp, but there is an airstrip close by for fly-in safaris.
Every day, flights leave Nairobi for Kalama and Sassab Airstrip. From there, it takes 2.5 hours to drive to Kitich Forest Camp. It only takes 10 minutes more for private air services to get from Ngalai Airstrip to Kitich Forest Camp.
The Mathews Mountain Range is just east of the busy border town of Maralal. The town of Wamba is the only way to get there by car, which takes about three hours.
At Kitich Forest Camp, there is also a place for helicopters to land.
